How we calculate the carbon emissions, in brief

Blue Ventures Carbon Offset will calculate your carbon footprint for a range of different activities:

  • For flights, we calculate a standard value of CO² emitted for every kilometre travelled by plane, and a standard take-off and landing carbon cost, we calculate how much carbon you would directly be responsible for emitting. The complete methodology behind this is outlined here. We do include the global warming potential of emissions from air travel
  • For life, business, and other travel offsets we follow government guidance and assumptions out lined here

How we match your carbon emission to a mitigation activity

Once we have calculated your carbon footprint, we then match that value to a project that works to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.  To offset with our energy efficient and solar stove project the cost is £14 per tonne of carbon dioxide.  The detailed methodology behind this is outlined here.

BVCO funds and runs two seperate fuel efficient stove and solar stove programmes, Funding from Blue Ventures volunteers, Adventure Company travellers and Coral Cay Conservation volunteers goes to Madagascar to the project there in partnership with ADES

  • Blue Ventures volunteers please click here to find out more about your project.
  • Coral Cay volunteers please click here to find out more about your project.
  • Adventure Company travellers please click here to find out more about your project.

All those offsetting through the website or through our carbon footprint plan will be funding the stove programme in South Africa; working in partnership with SunFire Solutions.

Each stove reduces carbon emissions by 1.5 - 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually per stove successfully implemented. This estimation is then monitored by our local staff and monitoring programme that measures not only the carbon reductions but the additional social, economic and environmental changes that occur as a result of the programme.

Quality assurance

Be assured that your offset will only be made by projects that are additional and independently verified. Audits are conducted annually by a third party verifier. All monitoring information will be assessed and reported to all those funding the programme on a quarterly basis.

We work with TICOS to develop programmes for business funding and TICOS verified carbon reductions. If you are a business interested in this please contact ellie@blueventures.org.
